Summer Solstice Celebration

-

Description

The annual Friends of Aztalan State Park summer solstice celebration, marking the longest day of the year, will take place at Aztalan State Park.

Solar events were important to the ceremonial life of the Mississippian people who lived in this ancient Native American town. We will gather at the park shelter at the second parking lot at Aztalan State Park, where snacks and beverages will be provided. Following a discussion of the marking of solar events at Aztalan and among the Mississippians, we will view the summer solstice sunset (weather permitting) at 8:35 p.m. from the large platform mound.

A short contemporary dance accompanied by music from Dance Studio 3-D of Lake Mills will help us welcome summer.

The program is free, but a vehicle admission pass is needed and can be purchased at the park. Donations towards the proposed new visitor's center at the park being planned by the Friends of Aztalan State Park will also be gladly accepted.
